Take these JHSPH open online courses for free. Or study any of them for an approved (RN-CEP 11430, MFT- PCE 39) 30-hours Continuing Education Certificate (3 CEUs) and take the multiple-choice quiz that is linked to the course.

Online Open College Courses

Some content for the below linked courses is provided by the OpenCourseWare Project and is not developed or owned by LearnWell or the Klimes Institute. The courses are just linked on the Internet in the same way as other online links are provided. But these links form the basis for LearnWell Open College Courses. There is no fee for using OpenCourseWare, but there is a fee for the related testing and the issuing of the accredited continuing education certificate.

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's OpenCourseWare (OCW) project, provides access to content of the School's most popular courses. These courses do not require that participants register and do not provide access to JHSPH faculty. LearnWell Resources and the Klimes Institute thanks JHSPH for the free use of these materials. These courses are not approved for academic credit or other use by JHSPH or any other educational institution, they are accredited by state agencies for professional continuing education for health care professionals.

We feel a moral imperative to provide equal and open access to information and knowledge about the obstacles to the public's health and their potential solutions. There is provided a list of Frequently Asked Questions to assist you as you navigate the site.

C110 Basic Statistics: Descriptive Statistics and Sampling

Textbooks:  http://davidmlane.com/hyperstat/     http://www.psychstat.smsu.edu/sbk00.htm

Lessons:  Part 1   Part  2   Part 3

This course provides an introduction to selected important topics in statistical concepts and reasoning. It represents an introduction to the field and provides a survey of data and data types. Specific topics include tools for describing central tendency and variability in data; methods for performing inference on population means and proportions via sample data.  While there are some formulae and computational elements to the course, the emphasis is on interpretation and concepts. This course is an adaptation of a course originally developed and taught by Ron Brookmeyer. Objectives:

  • Understand and give examples of different types of data.
  • Calculate standard normal scores and resulting probabilities.
  • Calculate and interpret confidence intervals for population means and proportions.

Lesson: Part 4.  Physicians' Reactions to Overweight Patients. Do physicians discriminate against overweight patients? This study indicates that, at least in one respect, they do.

Lesson Part 5.  Sampling

C111 Statistical Hypothesis Testing: Comparing Two Groups

This course teaches statistical hypothesis testing and its application to group comparisons; issues of power and sample size in study designs; and random sample and other study types. Objectives:

  • Perform a two-sample t-test and interpret the results; calculate a 95% confidence interval for the difference in population means.
  • Use Stata to perform two sample comparisons of means and create confidence intervals for the population mean differences.
